09/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - Ahead of the IGC at Head of State and Government level on Friday and Saturday, MEP Mario Segni (Patto Liberaldemocratici) has written to the President of the Council of the EU, Franco Frattini, protesting against the Italian Presidency proposal to modify article 116 of the Treaty on economic and territorial cohesion, limiting it to "certain" islands and mountain areas (see EUROPE/Documents 2342, 3 December 2003). This goes against the Nice conclusions, said the Chairman of the "Islands" Intergroup of the Parliament. The Sardinian Mario Segni says that he cannot understand how such a suggestion can come from one of the European countries with the most islands and mountains, with "Sicily, Sardinia, Calabria and the entire Alpine Arc".
