Brussels, 09/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Russian oil tanker Geroi Sevastopolya left the port of Ventspils in Latvia on Saturday, heading for Singapore with 50,000 tonnes of oil. The three inspectors from the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), who went to Latvia on Friday morning to inspect the boat (see EUROPE of 5 December) apparently found no anomalies. The oil tanker duly left the Latvian port and is on its way to Asia on the planned route (the same as the Prestige one year before), via the Spanish coast, through the Gibraltar Strait and the Suez Canal. It will, however, not be authorised to sail any closer than 200 miles away from the French and Spanish coast, and itinerary will be closely monitored by the services of the European Commission.
