THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/igc

08/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - In an interview with Le Soir on 8 December, co-president of the Greens/FTA European Parliament group, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, renewed his appeal to the IGC on the future European Constitution (our translation throughout). "…If the fruit is not ripe, one should not eat it. It may ripen at the last minute under the artificial sun of Brussels (...), but if that does not happen, it would be better to postpone the signing" (see EUROPE of 4 December, p.4). Mr Cohn-Bendit added: "I would like to tell Guy Verhofstadt not to sell the European Constitution for the President of the Commission job". And, although he feels that the Belgian Prime Minister's application for this post could well be successful, he said: "... the fact that, like Louis Michel, he is presenting himself as top of his party's list for the European elections is scandalous. To take an election hostage to measure one's popularity should be beneath him".
