Brussels, 03/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - Since 31 October, EU member states are held to conform with the provisions of the latest version of the Directive setting out Community standards in terms of privacy and personal data in electronic communications (OJ L 201 of 31/07/2003, p. 37 to 47). This text notably imposes fundamental obligations aimed at guaranteeing the security and confidentiality of communications on EU electronic networks, including the internet and mobile services. It defines specific conditions to be respected when installing cookies on personal computers and on the use of location data produced by mobile phone. We should also note that the Directive introduces a ban on spam email throughout the EU; the European Commission intends to publish a specific Communication on this matter by the end of the year.
