Brussels, 03/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Round Table of Industrialists (ERT) states in a press release that "now is the right moment for the European Union to energetically re-engage with trading partners on the substance of the Doha Round". According to business leaders meeting with the ERT, the reactions of members of the World Trade Organisation after the failure of Cancun shows there is "broad consensus in favour of moving swiftly to conclude the business outstanding" since the WTO ministerial in Mexico. "That reaction is shared, without qualification, by European business", stresses an ERT press release, which goes on to add: "News from the APEC Summit was encouraging. The backing for the Doha Round from such a major group of trading nations shows that the will exists to get the multilateral negotiations back on track. Now the European Union must also move. There should be no doubt on the continuing commitment to multilateralism that has driven Europe for decades. It is certainly not the time to be distracted with an agenda for institutional reform in the WTO - even if such reform may be a worthwhile objective in the longer term. (…) But flexibility is now needed - from the EU, the US and all the key players - if the Round is to succeed". (See EUROPE of 30 October, p.15, on the subject of the warning by Pascal Lamy against any precipitation to resume WTO negotiations).
