Amendments to European information and security network agency draft

Brussels, 14/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 8 October the European Parliament industry committee adopted and amended the proposal by the "European Information and Security Network Agency". This subject, debated by the Transport/Telecommunications Council on 5 June (EUROPE 6 June), should be in the European Parliament plenary in Strasbourg next week. Most amendments adopted, focus on the tasks given to this new body. This agency, has in effect, the goal of planning for problems such as computer crashes, visures, interception or unsuccessful communications in information technology networks. MEPs outline three points: this new agency will monitor solutions and ensure that they are easily accesible for small and medium enterprises; it will act in an advisory capactity to the Commission, European Parliament, relevant European and national bodies as well as the business community. It will also be responsible for publishing calls for tender into reseach into its area. The agency's management committee (5 representatives designated by the Council, 5 by the Commission, 2 by the Parliament, as well as 4 company representatives and 2 represenatives from consumer associations), MEPs want the management committee to obtain the approval of the Commission and Parliament before 31 January of each year. MEPs consider that this agency should have a limited duration (until 2008). Parliament and the Council should also have their work to say about extending the agency's contract beyond this period, rather than leaving this decision to the Commission alone.
