14/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - According to Italian press agency ANSA, on the sidelines of the Agriculture/Fisheries Council which he was chairing in Luxembourg on Monday, Italian Agriculture Minister Giovanni Alemanno obtained the agreement of European Commissioner Franz Fischler to hold a round table in Brussels to discuss the reform of the tobacco sector proposed by the European Commission. Italy is concerned at the impact such a reform could have on employment, says ANSA, indicating that according to a study submitted by the Italian delegation on Monday to the Agriculture Commissioner, 134,000 people in Italy are entirely or partially dependent on the tobacco sector. Umbria and Campania are the most-affected regions, says the Italian agency, quoting Mr Alemanno who warned: "for tobacco, we could say that we run the risk of another Fiat happening in agriculture. A less concentrated threat to employment, but no less grave than with Fiat, which is the kind of thing that finds its way onto the front pages of the newspapers".
