14/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo urged for the conclusion of a free trade agreement between Peru and the EU during his meeting on Monday with the French President, Jacques Chirac, according to AFP. The European Union had nonetheless pointed out during the EU/Latin America summit in 2002 that it did not plan to conclude agreements other than region to region agreements with Andean countries or Central American countries. It set two preconditions: - the strengthening of regional integration and conclusion of the round of multilateral trade talks at the WTO. Reflection on the post Cancun period should also cover how appropriate new regional agreements are. The EU and the Andean Community should, moreover, conclude a new cooperation agreement on Thursday.
