08/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - According to AFP, the new toll system for heavy goods lorries that Germany has wanted to introduce for several months, will not enter into force on 2 November as planned. Manfred Stolpe, the German Minister for Transport admitted on Monday in a TV interview that, "One thing is certain: the Christmas celebrations will be toll-free". Transport Commissioner, Loyola de Palacio and the German Minister reached a compromise last August to allow German to introduce the new tolls but not the assistance system it wanted to set up at the same time, which is being investigated by competition services (EUROPE 27 August p 6).
