Brussels, 08/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - At the initiative of Commissioners Pascal Lamy and Erkki Liikanen, responsible for trade and industrial affairs respectively, the European Commission is expected to present, on 22 October, a communication to the Council and Parliament on measures to be taken to face up to the challenges linked to the dismantling of textile quotas when the multifibre agreement expires in 2005. The broad consultation which ended in the spring allowed identification of a number of challenges and questions. During the finalisation of the document, it will seek to answer these questions with a view to developing a coherent policy for the trade in textiles and clothing after abolition of quota restrictions which have been a feature of the world market for the past 40 years.
