Agreement on principle of list of safe countries of origin, but many points still to be resolved before directive on asylum procedures is adopted

Brussels, 02/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Ministers for the Interior of the Fifteen agreed on Thursday to adopt a joint list of safe countries. With the exception of the United Kingdom, they all also agreed on criteria a country must meet to be considered safe, announced the Italian Minister, Giuseppe Pisanu, at a press conference. These criteria are, amongst others, based on respect for the International Conventions and the rule of law. The European Commission will prepare an initial list...
