Brussels, 29/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has taken provisional anti-dumping measures against sodium cyclamate imported from China and Indonesia. The rate of the duty applicable to these products during six months is fixed at 25.5% for Indonesian traders and at between 5.8 and 29.5% for the Chinese. In the regulation published in the Official Journal L232, the European Commission concludes in the existence of dumping and serious injury for the Community industry. This follows an inquiry which was initiated after a complaint was filed by the Spanish company Productos Aditivos, the only European producer of sodium cyclamate. In this context, the inspection visits which should have been made on the Asian production sites where this additive is made (a sweetener used by the food and pharmaceuticals industry), were not fully carried out due to the restrictions imposed on travel to China and Indonesia at the time of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic. The Community inspectors nonetheless had time, just before health measures were brought in, to make a first visit to exporting producers, who were requesting market economy status. The three companies in question, all Chinese, obtained satisfaction and now have reduced duties applied to them (5.8% for two of them and 23.4% for the third). We recall that all the parties still have a few weeks left (until end October) in which to put forward their requests for information or for a hearing by the Commission. They may also make their comments known with regard implementation the new regulation.
