Conference on consequences of Cancun failure on trade and development

Brussels, 26/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - With the backing of the European Commission, the Heinrich Böll Institute, the CISL, Concord et la Fondation Roi Baudoin, the Solidar network will be organising a post-Cancun international conference, "What Future for Development" in Brussels on 14 October, exactly a month after the failure of the Fifth Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The objective is to encourage participants, including the Negotiator in Chief for the Union, Pascal Lamy, as well as members of his team, the First Secretary of Trade for Zambia, Edward Chisanga and representatives from the European Parliament, the UNDP, unions and NGOs, to assess the results reached at Cancun and analyse the European negotiating position from a point of vie of development, indicated the organisers in a press statement. This will also provide the occasion for civil society organisations to present their demands to the Community negotiators on farming issues, the General Agreement on Trade and Services (GATS) and investments, as well as the possibility to, "reflect on the Union positions it has to adopt during future negotiations so that trade will benefit everyone", they added. Representatives from civil society will prepare their interventions the day before in the framework of three workshops, on agriculture, services and Singapore issues. Together with Oxfam International, Make Trade Fair and CIDSE, Solidar had already organised a similar event last May. Registration should be completed before 6 October with Anja Osterhaus and Bartosz Lercel, rue du Commerce 22, B-1030 Brussels, Fax: 0032-(0)-25001030, Tel: (0)2--500 10 20, (wtoconference@solidar.org).
