Via Campesina welcomes Cancun failure

Brussels, 26/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Friday, ten days after the failure of the Ministerial Conference of Cancun, the international small farmers network, Via Campesina, is claming, "Victory! The WTO was topped!" "The WTO couldn't even say where the next Ministerial conference would be", underlined the movement, criticising the absence of al "Declarations expressing agreement on different themes" and the lack of time, "for developing a consensus on a future agenda". It considers that, "this, as well as the anticipated withdrawal of several countries from the south, had provoked confusion and chaos at the ministerial conference". It also mentioned the, "arrogant and inflexible approach" of the Union and USA, "which demonstrated their total inability to understand and take into account the legitimate interests of these people", by claiming that, "their blackmail practices" were the cause of the "opposition block formed by the third world, led by Brazil, India and China with them". Via Campesina points out, nevertheless, that it, "welcomed this opposition and disagreed with the proposals of the G 22 on agriculture" as, "increasing liberalisation and market access does not resolve the problems of poverty and exclusion for millions of people in the world. On the contrary, this would only aggravate the situation".
