Brussels, 23/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - Alexandros Alavanos, Greek member of the United Left/Nordic Left group, put a question to the Council of the European Union on Iraq's seat in the UN. He feels that Iraq, as an occupied country, does not have the legitimacy justifying keeping a seat at the UN. He is therefore proposing that Iraq be suspended as a UN member until free elections are declared, in the presence of UN observers. Mr Alvanos pointed out that Cambodia was suspended in this way from 1979 to 1989, after power was seized by the Vietnamese occupying force.
