10/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament (which is not being consulted on this issue) wants the Council to reject a Dutch plan to change rules governing the court responsible for ending job contracts. The idea behind the Brussels I regulation, approved in 2001, is that only courts in the state of residence of an employee are competent. The Netherlands wants courts in the place of work to be competence. On in initiative of British Liberal MEP Diana Wallis MEPs reject the plan because the entry into force of the Nice Treaty no longer allows this kind of initiative buy a single Member State. But they call on the Commission to look at the issue and decide if necessary to make amendments, as long as the situation works in an employee's favour.
