Brussels, 10/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - Two new applications for registration pursuant to the 1992 regulation on the protection of geographical indications and designations of origin have been published in the Official Journal C 212 on 6 September 2003. France is seeking to protect its "Melon du Quercy" produced in the Tarn and Garonne, Lot and Lot and Garonne areas. This melon has a smooth or netted grey/green to yellow peel and orange flesh and weighs from 450 g to 1,300 g and above. The other application involves the Carne de Cantabria, a beef meat (beef from the Tudanca, Mochina, Asturian, Highland Brown and Limousin breeds and crosses thereof. The geographical area stretches to the whole of the Autonomous Community of Cantabria in Spain. The European Commission will decide whether to protect these products if there is no opposition from another Member State or third country in a deadline of six months as from publication of the applications in the Official Journal.
