Brussels, 10/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - In Mongolia, where he has been attending the fifth International Conference of New and Restored Democracies (Ulan Baator, 10-12 September), the European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Poul Nielson, highlighted the difficulties in restoring democracy after decades of dictatorship, pledging EU support to all emerging democracies in this task, so vital for tackling poverty. "Elections alone will not necessarily make a country a democracy or give it the political stability for it to flourish," said the Commissioner, mentioning transparency inside political parties, freedom of the press and the flourishing of organised civil society. Nielson will be travelling on from Mongolia to China, where he will be visiting cooperation projects funded by the EU.
