Brussels, 23/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - For the first time since the conclusion of the EU/Greenland fisheries in 1985, the European Commission and Member States reached an agreement on Friday for the transfer of unused quotas. This follows recent changes to the current protocol in accordance with the EU move towards the development of partnership agreements between the EU and Greenland (EUROPE 28 June 2003 p 12). Hence, Germany agreed to transfer 5,000 tonnes of redfish from its quota allocation to the east of Greenland to Spain and Portugal (2,125 tonnes each), Sweden (500 t) and the United Kingdom (250 t). Germany also agreed to transfer 500 tonnes of western redfish each to Ireland, Portugal and Spain. The various parties will meet again in September to examine whether there is a chance of further transfers of quotas between Member States.
