EU demands re-establishing of constitutional order

Brussels, 23/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - On behalf of the European Union the Italian Presidency has made the following declaration, "The EU strongly condemns the military rebellion which took place on the 16th July in S. Tome and Principe. The EU rejects any unconstitutional seizure of power and emphasises its commitment to the principles of rule of law and democratic processes which are the only means for a change in Government. The EU welcomes the statement by the AU's Presidency and the Portuguese Speaking Countries Community condemning the military rebellion and appealing for the restoration of the constitutional order. The EU calls on the military forces involved to free all Ministers and other detainees, cease the rebellion and restore the rule of law and democracy in S. Tome and Principe, without violence.
