THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/laos

30/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - Lista Bonino MEP Oliver Dupuis is calling on the European Commission to announce how it is planning to express its “indignation” to Laos about “yet another violation of the fundamental rights of Laotians and foreigners”, namely the detention of a Belgian journalist, Thierry Falise, since 4 June 2003, along with a French photographer, Vincent Reynaud, Na-Karl Mua (of the US) and four Laos nationals whose identities have not been released. Dupuis explains that the team of seven was preparing a report north of the capital Ventiane on the Hmong people, who have been savagely repressed by the Laos authorities for years. He points out that the first three risk heavy prison sentences, adding that no information has been forthcoming about the four Laos nationals arrested.
