Brussels, 13/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has approved the acquisition of part of the oil business of BP Plc in southern Germany by the Austrian company OMV Aktiengesellschaft. The OMV group is active in the production, refining and distribution of mineral oil products, including service stations, chemical industry and natural gas. BP is a multinational petroleum and petrochemicals group. The acquisition mainly concerns a number of BP service stations in southern Germany (247 stations), a non-controlling shareholding in the Bayernoil refinery as well as output rights from this refinery and a (non-controlling) interest in the Transalpine oil pipeline, and arises from a decision by the Federal Cartel Office, whereby BP undertook to divest certain assets in connection with the BP/E.ON merger. The Commission remarked that the merger did not raise any competition concerns on any of the markets considered. In the market for jet fuel, OMV will have a strong position regarding supplies to the Munich Airport but there remains sufficient competition, both actual and potential.
