13/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - In a position paper published with a view to the Thessaloniki Summit, the European Association of Craft, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (UEAPME) deplores the fact that the Commission was not able, in its latest Broad Economic Policy Guidelines, to tackle the short term European economic problems. It therefore calls on the Heads of State and Government in Thessaloniki to adopt a short term macro-economic policy in order to bring the EU out of its economic stagnation, as a matter of urgency. The UEAPME also calls upon: 1) the European Commission and the Ecofin Council to interpret the Stability Pact in order to force the Member States to implement the structural reforms without pro-cyclical effect; 2) the national social partners to guarantee that the evolution of salaries is along the lines of the targets on inflation and support competitiveness and job creation; 3) Member States to really implement the structural reforms agreed in the BEPG.
