10/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution for the Thessalonika Summit adopted last week in Strasbourg on the Zabreb II trial, the European Parliament notes that it will take a long time for Stability and Association Pact countries to join the EU. It calls on the parliaments of these countries to prioritise effective policies for the return of refugees and protection of national minorities; policies to actively combat organised crime, ratification of the Council of Europe conventions on corruption and money laundering, and effective cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia. The EP is also calling for the EU's CARDS programme to be amended to focus on aid to consolidate legal systems, enhance measures to combat crime and corruption, education, and the media and civil society.
