Strasbourg, 10/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - Adopting a resolution last Thursday by all the political groups apart from the UEN and the EDD, the EP called for the immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi, arrested on 31 May along with 19 other members of her party, the national democracy league. It again called for the release of all political prisoners, for human rights to be respected and for all universities to be immediately re-opened. It called on the Council to immediate extend the visa ban and the freeze of assets decided in its 28 April 2003 common position, which had been suspended until 29 October 2003 hoping to see progress in the restoration of democracy. That hope has now clearly been confounded.
