Draft preamble puts "spiritual impulse", always present in European heritage, and "philosophical currents of the Enlightenment" on equal footing- reference to "equality of persons, freedom, respect for reason"

Brussels, 30/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - Beginning with a quotation from Thucydides: "Our Constitution is called democratic because power is in the hands not of a minority but of the whole people", the draft preamble published by the Praesidium of the Convention refers to "the cultural, religious and humanist inheritance of Europe", and to the contributions of the Greek and Roman civilisations, as well as to the philosophical currents of the Enlightenment.
