Interim reports on assessment of integration of Community acquis will be finalised in mid-June

Brussels, 23/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is in the process of finalising the second round of its monitoring exercise aimed at assessing whether the accession and candidate countries fulfil the requirements in terms of the integration of the Community acquis. Interim reports are ready, with the exception of the chapter dedicated to Justice and Home Affairs expected in mid-June, confirmed, on Friday, Jean-Christophe Filori, spokesperson for the Commissioner responsible for Enlargement, Günter Verheugen. He added that the Commission was waiting for the reports to be complete in order to make a global assessment and take the decision, when necessary, of sending early warning letters to the countries concerned. Mr Filori also indicated that '28 cases' out of more than 2000 reviews, had been identified as requiring specific additional efforts. This slight increase is partly due to the fact that agriculture was not been included in the first monitoring phase. Let us recall that this second phase of the monitoring process is only an intermediary exercise. Mr Filori underlined that the final reports are expected in November, adding that this would be decisive to the extent that they will caste light over whether the safeguard measures have been adopted.
