Brussels, 23/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Monday the Greek Presidency will propose a working document to the Agriculture-Fisheries Council that it drafted in agreement with the European Commission aimed at resolving the problems, opposing Spain and Ireland, concerning the expiry since the beginning of the year of the Irish Box rules. The Presidency is proposing to among others retain a protection area for juvenile hakes, but only in the waters to the south of Ireland and to introduce measures for the reduction of fleet capacity and for control. Moreover, it is proposing offering an additional gift to Spain, which is not to Portugal's taste: extend the fishing zone in the waters of the ultraperipheral region (Azores and Madera to the benefit of the Spanish and the low catch islands of the Canaries for the Portuguese fishermen). On Monday the ministers will examine the Presidency's ideas, through which the Presidency hopes to successfully resolve this dossier during the Agriculture-Fisheries Council in June. Last December the Commission presented a proposal for a new fishing effort system in the zones that extend from the Gulf of Gascoigne to the waters located to the west and north-west of Ireland and the United Kingdom (western waters) (EUROPE of 20 December 2002).
