23/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Council President Coastas Simitis underlined, according to Reuters, on Thursday in London after a meeting with Tony Blair, that it is important for all the members of the EU are to be part of the Euro area when the future European Constitution is adopted. Tony Blair also indicated on Thursday that a consensus was developing within his government over the issue of accession by the United Kingdom to the single currency. Each of the cabinet members clearly expressed their support for the principal of accession to the single currency and for the benefits implied, he said when leaving a cabinet meeting dedicated to this issue, before recalling that this decision must be based on long-term economic interests. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, should announce the government's decision, on 9 June in the House of Commons. However, according to the press, he should conclude that the accession criteria he personally defined in 1997 are as yet unfulfilled. Mr Blair, who feels that accession to the single currency forms part of the United Kingdom's future, promised to organise a referendum if his Minister considers the economic conditions answered.
