"Eurocritics" propose "alternative model"

Brussels, 16/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, Convention Members from the Democracy Forum have attacked the draft for the European Constitution presented by the European Convention Presidium. David Heathcoat-Amory was worried that the draft was a, "perfect scenario for confusion and endless conflict", whereas William Abitbol from the same group, said that the Convention had become a kind of lottery where the organisations had all the tickets. Esko Seppänen, a Finnish member of the United Left/Nordic Green Left informed the plenary on Friday that the Convention was not representative and had become a precision weapon of the federalists. He explained that members of the Presidium did not dare to contradict the President and when the President went off to eat, they did not have the courage to take advantage of his absence to introduce corrections. Other Eurocritics joined in the choir of protests and put forward their own "alternative model" on the future of Europe. Leaders from fourteen countries requested that: countries had the right to leave the EU or to participate "to a lesser extent"; certain powers were "repatriated" to Member States (like fisheries policy); national parliaments became the "alpha and omega of legislation" by giving an initial boost to the debate and by announcing the final vote, whereas the EP should concentrate on the technical details of the second readings; that the veto is maintained.
