Duisenberg to remain in office until his successor has been appointed - only Belgium still supports its candidate for replacing Sirkka Hämälainen

Athens, 07/04/2003 (Agence Europe) - Wim Duisenberg, President of the European Central Bank, gave a favourable response to the request made by Economy and Finance ministers of the EU at their informal meeting in Athens, saying "to ensure smooth transition, I shall be pleased to continue as president (of the ECB) for some time (…) until my successor has been appointed".
