Brussels, 27/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - German Interior Minister Otto Schily considers a war in Iraq might allow terrorist organisations to recruit new members or to wake up "dormant" cells. Mr Schily told the press on the fringe of the JHA Council that he had spoken with his colleagues on Thursday, over lunch, about strengthening cooperation between police and intelligence services in the event of war. It would be necessary to strengthen cooperation in the context of Europol and the police task force as well as between secret services, he said. If there were a war that did not last very long, Mr Schily said he expected a six figure number of refugees, by way of one or several hundred thousands, but that this would rise considerably in the event of prolonged conflict.
