17/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - MEPs from Lista Bonino welcomed the adoption by the European Parliament last week of the Malliori report on the fight against drug addiction, while denouncing the report for its "lack of political courage", in ignoring medically supervised heroin distribution programmes, and other programmes applied with success in several member states to limit damage caused by drug use (see EUROPE of 15 February, p. 15). We hope that the Greek presidency "will be more courageous", says Italian radical Marco Cappato, when proposing to the member states an EU-wide position for the UN Conference in Vienna next April on the evaluation of the UN programmes to eradicate drugs from the world. Once again he states that "the failure of the prohibitionist regime will show the need for reform of these UN Conventions", and notably the abolition of obstacles to member states' alternative policies.
