Brussels, 17/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - Last Thursday the Greek Presidency published a declaration reiterating the support of the EU for organising a donors conference for Cyprus. The deadline of 28 February set by Kofi Anan as the objective for an agreement on the island is fast approaching. The EU notes that the "issue of the substantial economic funds required for the implementation of the comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem…is of great significance to all Cypriots…For this reason the EU support the UN proposal for an International Donors' Conference to be held soon after the signature of the political agreement and the reunification of Cyprus". The Presidency points out that "The European Commission has already announced its readiness to organise the conference in question, after the signature of the Political Agreement". The EU is calling on the international community and all international financial organisation to back this project and contribute to the "costs linked to the political settlement and the reconciliation of the two communities in Cyprus".
