17/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) commented in a press release on the vote on the Sandbaek report, expressing its fears about the possibility that policy aid on health and reproduction to developing countries could promote abortion. The draft regulation concerns the financing of "sexual or reproductive health services", and although the range of services in question is not defined, "we understand them to include abortion," criticise the European bishops, who add: "It is for the countries receiving funds (…) to decide (…) whether or not the services to be funded include abortion (…). We trust there is reason to believe that there will be no discrimination against development and health organisations which do not provide abortion."
