Brussels, 13/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - In a press release published on Wednesday, Euratex - the European Apparel and Textile Organisation - takes stock of a consensus with representatives of the South Korean industry regarding negotiations on access to the non-agricultural product market under way in Geneva within the framework of the Doha Development Agenda. "European industry's objectives coincide very clearly with those of KOFOTI (South Korean Textile and Clothing Federation) in the major areas of tariff and non-tariff barriers, and we have agreed to work together closely in the coming months to achieve a convergence of views as to how to realise them", it was stated on Tuesday by KOFOTI Vice Chairman Young-Kie Ahn, who headed the South Korean delegation in Brussels. Euratex President Filiep Libeert said he was confident the meeting had "laid a firm foundation for an ongoing dialogue". Both parties, who discussed the current situation at length at the WTO and reviewed the proposals made by their respective authorities, agree in thinking that: - the members of the WTO must obtain results allowing tariff peaks and high customs duties to be abolished in order to facilitate access by high quality products from Europe and Korea to the markets of the other countries; - the 145 must find a mechanism for dismantling tariff obstacles in the textile trade.
