MEPs not unanimous on sending delegation to Iraq

Brussels, 23/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - Whether or not to send an EP delegation to Iraq (first passing by New York to meet the head of the UN inspectors Hans Blix) was discussed in Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee. According to its chair, Elmar Brok, such a an initiative is only desirable if the MEPs can meet Saddam Hussein, whereas Dutch Liberal Bob van den Bos fears that such a visit could complicate the work of the UN inspectors. After Iraq, where will we want to go? North Korean or Iran?", wondered Greek Communist Efstratios Korakas. As for the political message to take to Baghdad, German Socialist Jannis Sakellariou, said that war needed first averting, then the Iraqi regime disarmed, whereas Philippe Morillon (French, EPP) thought that if they simply said "never war" to Saddam Hussein, they would lose credibility. British Conservative Geoffrey Van Orden then suggested they behaved like France, which has done everything for there to be no war, but without ruling out the possibility.
