23/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Council has decided, by written procedure, to extend until 31 December 2003, the Decision of 29 January 2001, partially suspending aid to Haiti. This Decision reflects EU recognition of the efforts made to find a solution to the political crisis but also expresses worries regarding the conditions (respect for the democratic principles), which have have not been upheld in the framework of the ACP-EU Partnership Agreement. Given the economic and social situation in Haiti, the Council has also decided to redirect funds from the non-provision of the 8th EDF to programmes providing direct aid to the people, as well as support for civil society, the private sector and the strengthening of democracy and the State of Law.
