03/12/2002 (Agence Europe) - With a ruling of the Upper Chamber last Thursday, the European Court of Human Rights decided to allocate EUR 12 million to the former King Constantine of Greece, EUR 900,000 to his sister, the Princess Irene, and 300,00 to his aunt, Princess Catherine. This final ruling thus compels the Greek State to compensate the three members of the former royal family, who currently live in the United Kingdom and Spain, at the Tatoi, Polydendri and Mon Repos estates. The Upper Chamber thus drew the consequences of a ruling made on 23 November 2000, which noted that the claimants were the owners of these three estates and, during the abolition of the monarchy, should have benefited from ordinary expropriation measures accompanied by fair compensation. The Greek government had unsuccessfully insisted that, during the abolition of various European monarchies, other governments confiscated the property of the royal family without making a distinction between the personal belongings and those attributed to the family as part of their function.
