Brussels, 03/12/2002 (Agence Europe) - According to Danielle Auroi (French, Green), the agreement between EU Agriculture Ministers on the labelling and accidental presence of GMOs in food "simply allowed for the worst to be avoided". According to her, when one knows that current techniques can detect the presence of GMOs of 0.01%, this "poor compromise" (which sets at 0.9% the threshold from which the presence of GMOs in food must be the subject of labelling) "can in no way be considered as a victory of transparency or consumer information". According to Ms. Auroi, the United Kingdom, which pleaded for the labelling of food containing from 1% of GMOs and for the tolerance of accidental presence of GMOs of an equivalent level, "should rush to read the recent report by the Soil Association that refers to very worrying results (at environmental and economic level) of the six first years of large-scale commercial experimentation on the continent of North America".
