Eurocommerce and FTA welcome EU proposals on industrial liberalisation

Brussels, 28/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - In an open letter to Commissioner Pascal Lamy dated 27/1102, the European trade representatives welcomed Union proposals on liberalisation of access to industrial markets throughout the world, as "another step in the right direction". Eurocommerce and the Foreign Trade Association are, nonetheless, "encouraging" Mr Lamy and his team of negotiators "to resist the temptation to tone down your position". Both organisations are in fact "clearly in favour" of the main elements of this document, which will be discussed next week in Geneva within the framework of the new World Trade Organisation round, particularly: the extensive cover for products (focusing essentially on those of interest to developing countries), the focus of negotiations on horizontal tariff reductions, bringing customs duties close to zero, the unilateral dismantling of tariffs on all products from less advances countries specificity of ensuring that deadlines are respected by developing countries within the implementation of their commitments, the ending of quantitative restrictions, the reduction of maximum tariff levels, the tackling of non-tariff barriers.
