Brussels, 28/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - Thursday's Council did not reach a political agreement on the directive relating to the minimum conditions for hosting asylum seekers. There was, on the other hand, an agreement on the request put by Germany for its Länder to remain free to decide on access to the labour market. The directive defines the conditions for informing asylum seekers, their movement and access to education. The only outstanding problem concerns Sweden which is opposed to an amendment by the United Kingdom requesting that a Member State remain free not to grant aid to persons who have not declared they are asylum seekers as soon as they enter British territory.
