EP wants enhanced co-operation but calls for suspension of the death sentence of Hashem Adghajari

Strasbourg, 25/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - In its debates on human rights last Thursday, the European Parliament confirmed its stance in favour of enhanced co-operation between the EU and Iran, especially the "critical dialogue" on human rights, while calling for the immediate suspension of the death sentence passed down on Professor Hashem Adghajari, member of the reform movement that backs President Khatami. In a resolution tabled by six political groups, Parliament says that it is waiting for the visit that an Iranian Parliament delegation is to make to prepare the parliamentary relations of tomorrow with the Iranian Majilis, and welcomes the fact that President Khatami, his cabinet and several deputies had announced that they would resign if the democratic reforms they recommend do not go through. The resolution states that any trade or co-operation between the EU and Iran must comprise a human rights clause "based on the corresponding article of the Cotonou Agreement", and that this future agreement should be put to the European Parliament for approval.
