Brussels, 28/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - In addition to the Stability and Growth Pact, the EU needs a pact for coordinating economic policies, Jacques Delors repeated Friday last on the French radio channel, EUROPE 1. The former president of the European Commission felt that Romano Prodi was right to rekindle the debate on the Stability Pact (that Pr Prodi had described as "rigid" and "stupid"), but that he had been clumsy in his choice of words. "The European Central Bank (ECB) works well. The stability pact would work well if there were a parallel pact on economic policy coordination", he who was one of the founding fathers of the euro declared, now adding that "Europe is walking on one leg, the monetary leg" while the EMU's economic dimension is too weak. Jacques Delors recalled that he had proposed a pact on economic policy coordination in 1997 but that the idea had been rejected by Jacques Chirac and by the Dutch government which held the rotating EU Presidency at the time. "Finance Ministers want to remain the masters of their own households and have resigned themselves to exchanging niceties. The result is that the real problems do not get tackled", Delors concluded.
