EP calls on EU to appoint a mediator between parties to the conflict

Strasbourg, 28/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - While condemning all acts of violence committed in Nepal, the EU calls on the EU Council to appoint a special representative responsible for serving as mediator between the parties to the conflict in the country. This is what is requested by a joint resolution by five political groups adopted last Thursday, in which the EP calls on the EU to release financial aid earmarked for Nepal, given the progress made to find a peaceful, negotiated solution. The EP calls on the new interim Prime Minister of Nepal, Lokendra Bahadur Ghand, to resume the promised dialogue between the government and the Maoist rebels, without preconditions. The parliamentarians rejected an amendment calling on Belgium to review its decision to deliver 5,500 machine guns to the Nepalese Government.
