28/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - The success of the Brussels summit was largely welcomed by the EP, which may question the Council and Commission on details at the plenary in Brussels on 6 November. The president of the EPP-ED Group, Hans-Gert Pöttering, noted that, with their "last minute" agreement, France and Germany, followed by the other Member States, showed that they had understood one should not compromise enlargement for the sake of petty calculations of national interest. CAP reform and the financial framework will be among the most difficult questions to be settled after enlargement, he admits. The CDU member also welcomes the fact that the Summit has not given a date for the beginning of negotiations with Turkey (Ed.: Turks would rather expect such an indication from the European Council in Copenhagen). The elected member of Democratici di sinistra, Pasqualina Napoletano, called on Silvio Berlusconi for clarification on the commitment taken by Italy in favour of enlargement. The Prime Minister must "disavow (…) the position of Lega Nord, Minister Bossi's party", she insists, recalling that Umberto Bossi, at the very time of the summit, was again highly critical of enlargement, "hinting that the Lega could cause obstructionism during the ratification (of the accession treaties) by the Italian parliament".
