Europe Daily Bulletin No. 8325

24 October 2002
THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/european council/budget/united kingdom

23/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - Jacques Chirac's declarations on the appropriateness of reviewing the British rebate to the EU budget (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.11) were strongly criticised by British MEPs. Thus, other than Liberal Graham Watson (page 6 of this bulletin), Conservative Jonathan Evans said: "Margaret Thatcher's rebate has been worth over £30 billion to Britain", and it is "fundamental to our financial relationship with the EU and is non-negotiable".
