Determination to find solutions on imports of agricultural and food products

Brussels, 21/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - After having discussed at length, in Beijing, on the mutual restrictions on imports of agricultural and food products, European Commissioner Pascal Lamy and his Chinese counterpart, Shi Guangsheng, agreed to continue with their attempt to reach an amicable solution from this week on, in Brussels. Also in Brussels, Chinese Deputy Trade Minister is expected by the services of Commissioner David Byrne, responsible for food safety. "Both sides are clearly determined to find technical solutions and solutions that are a little broader at political level", it is said in Brussels with a certain optimism about the possibility of settling the long series of potentially controversial affairs (the European embargo on Chinese meat-based products and the Chinese embargo on imports of the same products of Dutch origin, European restrictions to imports of Chinese shrimps, cosmetics and packaging). Europeans want to "explain the system that we have here and the early warning mechanism (…) We are seeking to make Chinese authorities understand that we are not taking protectionist measures but public health protection measures". (See EUROPE of 19 October, p.15).
