Amato briefs ministers

Brussels, 30/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - Monday morning, the Vice-President of the European Convention, Giuliano Amato presented the General Affairs Council with the state of work of the Convention, also explaining the different roles of the working groups that the Convention has set up. At a press conference, he justified this exercise by the need to have a dialogue with representatives of Member States so that the latter could not claim surprise by the text to emerge from the Convention. He told foreign ministers that the Convention would have difficulties in reaching a final text by 1 March 2003 but that it should manage so, as the ministers wished, by the European Council that is to be held in Thessaloniki (on 20 and 21 June: Ed.). Mr. Amato said that he had also been asked about the "name of the baby" and that he had answered ministers, recalling that the Laeken Declaration refers to a "fundamental treaty", that the Convention's President, Valry Giscard d'Estaing had then renamed "constitutional treaty" and that since then a British minister had said that the term "constitution would be fine".
