Brussels, 19/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Conference on South-east Asia: "South-east Asia: democracy and civil liberties denied: the situation in Burma, Laos and Vietnam", organised by the Transnational Radical Party of Marco Pannella has adopted conclusion requesting the European Union to completely re-examine its policy in regard to Laos and Vietnam by focusing on the encouragement of specific reforms supporting the State of Law, democracy and the market economy. The Radical Party has announced a demonstration on 16 October in front of the European Commission delegations in order to denounce the fact that the EU has reneged on the respect for the human rights clauses in the co-operation agreements with Laos and Vietnam. The conclusions assert that EU policy, based on development projects, bring no benefits to the people in the countries concerned but constitutes, on the contrary, an important form of assistance and legitimacy to the regimes in place.
